Lackawanna, New York was at the center of the steel manufacturing boom throughout most of the 20th century. In 1899 acres of land on the shores of Lake Erie was purchased by the Lackawanna Steel Company, based out of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Development was started in the year 1900 and the Lackawanna Steel Company moved to the site in 1902. The plant began operations in 1903. Later, in 1909, the residents of the area voted to split off from West Seneca, forming the city now known as Lackawanna.
